Benazir Bhutto was an influential, career politician in her home country of Pakistan. Bhutto twice served as the Prime Minister of the country, first from 1988 to 1990, then again from 1993 to 1996. Bhutto was in the throes of her third election bid when she died at the hands of a 15-year-old suicide bomber acting on behalf of the Pakistani Taliban. Though the motive is still largely unknown, Bhutto had a reputation for standing in opposition to the country’s numerous Islamic extremist groups.
