The Keys to the Universe: Ranking the Movies in the MCU

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron is another movie that suffers from the same problem as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Both are great sequels that fails to live up to the runaway success of original film.

Released in 2015, this film was the sequel to The Avengers, and follows the titular team in their fight against the sentient Ultron AI that’s bent on eradicating humanity in order to save Earth. The characters are all great — with the exception of maybe the Maximoffs — but the movie fails to live up to the hype of the original.

Iron Man

The very first MCU movie released in 2008 was Iron Man, and it set the tone for the MCU, and for comic book action movies as we know them today.

People were unsure about Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, but his performance convinced all the skeptics, and cemented his return to Hollywood after a series of drug-related arrests in 2000 and 2001. Iron Man follows Tony Stark’s invention of the Iron Man suit after he barely escaping being taken in hostage in Iraq, and his fight to take back Stark Industries from Obadiah Stane.

Thor: Ragnarok

One of the most CGI-heavy movies in the MCU is Thor: Ragnarok, which was released in 2017.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie was the third Thor film, and was a huge departure from the earlier two movies, which were much closer to drama and directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh and Alan Taylor. Thor: Ragnarok was lighter, despite the intense storyline that followed Thor fighting to get off the planet Sakaar in time to save Asgard from the impending Ragnarok, and featured great villains played by Jeff Goldblum and Cate Blanchett.
