The Biggest TV Renewals of 2018
Most SNL alumni that go on to produce and star in their own TV shows focus on comedies rather than dramas, but Barry, produced by Bill Hader, is a dark comedy-drama that follows a hitman who travels to LA to kill a mark, but gets involved in the local theater scene and decides to leave his life of crime. The first episode aired on HBO on March 25, 2018, and just two weeks later, the network renewed it for a second season. The show is a hilarious mixture of struggling actors, Chechen mobsters, and a stoic lead (Hader) who’s just trying to have it all.
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan was first ordered by Amazon as a 10-episode series in late 2017 — they were so confident that they didn’t request a pilot. Even though the show hasn’t even aired yet, it’s premier date is August 31, 2018, there’s so much hype surrounding it that Amazon just greenlit a second season.
Queer Eye is a Netflix-produced reboot of a cable reality show called Queer Eye for the Straight Guy that was produced by Bravo in the early 2000s. The show, which stars five fabulous gay designers, focuses on making over a man whose life and style could use a little love.
The reboot premiered on February 7, 2018, and it was huge hit with both fans of the original and new viewers. The focus on self-love, acceptance, and positivity was a joy to watch, and the upcoming second season will feature a diverse group of subjects including a female cancer survivor and a trans man.
