The Biggest TV Renewals of 2018

In the olden days of TV, we used to have to wait anxiously for the few times a year that network executives made their decisions about which programs would stay on the air, and which would get the axe. Now, shows are renewed as soon as there’s evidence that they’re successful. Often, it’s the morning after a successful pilot airs on TV.

While there have been some shows that have gotten the axe already this year, tons of our favorites are returning for further seasons. Here’s a list of some of the best shows that have already been picked up for renewal this year.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Although this comedy about Brooklyn police detectives was technically just cancelled by Fox, it was saved from the axe by NBC, who announced that they would be producing the show’s upcoming sixth season. There was a huge outpouring of support for the show after its cancellation was announced, and fans led a furious campaign to get another network to produce the show’s sixth season. Luckily, NBC ignored the show’s middling ratings and listened to the fans, and the sixth season will premiere on their roster some time in 2019.

Silicon Valley

Comedy legend Mike Judge’s TV series Silicon Valley follows the follies and trials of five young men attempting to take advantage of the Silicon Valley tech boom. The first season premiered on HBO in 2014, and it stars Thomas Middleditch as the painfully awkward Richard Hendricks and T.J. Miller as the brash Erlich Bachman.

Over the course of its five-season run, the show has gotten more popular and has consistently pulled in high ratings. In April of 2018, HBO announced that they would be picking up the show for a sixth season.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D was created for ABC by Joss Whedon, and follows a group of agents working for S.H.I.E.L.D (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division), a spy agency tasked with keeping the world safe from villains like the Inhumans, aliens, and the Hydra. It premiered in 2013, to high ratings but mixed critical reviews, and subsequent seasons have managed to keep the high ratings but bring in much better reviews. Renewed for a sixth season, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D is set to return summer 2019 with a shorter 13-episode order.
