The Best TV Spin-Offs Ranked
After Angel broke Buffy Summer’s heart on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, he packed up his bags and left for Los Angeles to make a new life. And that new life included him working as a private detective to fight off a demonic law firm. Seriously, you thought a Buffy spin-off wouldn’t have some crazy premise?
Although Joss Whedon had so much success with Buffy, many were surprised with how good Angel turned out to be. In fact, the show was so good that it helped launch the career of Angel himself and future Bones star David Boreanaz.
9. Family Matters
Who knew that a geeky neighbor with suspenders, high-water pants, and big glasses would be loved by America? Someone on the Perfect Strangers staff sure did and it worked. Family Matters was a spin-off of Perfect Strangers, another one of those Friday night family sitcoms on ABC.
Family Matters followed the lives of the Winslow Family, which was headed by Carl and Harriet (Reginald VelJohnson and Jo Marie Payton). While they were a lovable family, the true breakout star of the show was Jaleel White, who played the nerdy neighbor Steve Urkel, thanks in part to his iconic line, “Did I do that?”
8. NCIS: Los Angeles
With such a big hit like NCIS, there was no way CBS would pass up spinning off the franchise into new shows. The first of the two current NCIS spin-offs, Los Angeles follows the happenings of Los Angeles-based Office of Special Projects, a branch of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
NCIS: Los Angeles stars Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J. Most of their work is done undercover, but it works. They solve crime and CBS loves them for it, as they recently renewed the show for its ninth season.
