Politics Schmolitics: The Funniest Joke Political Parties
Union of Conscientiously Work-Shy Elements
The Union of Conscientiously Work-Shy Elements (UCWSE) was a political party founded in Denmark in 1979 by comedian Jacob Haugaard. He ran for his local seat in each parliamentary election from 1979 until 1994, when he was actually elected to the Danish Folketing. The platform of the UCWSE was mostly frivolous — Haugaard promised better weather, nicer Christmas presents, more whales in the fjords, and more bread for ducks in the parks. Once he was elected in 1994, he actually accomplished several things he said he was going to do, including increasing the amount of bread given to ducks. He also got Nutella included in the Danish army rations. Haugaard was a member of the Folketing from 1994 to 1998, where he often found himself as the tie-breaking vote on key issues. He retired from politics in 1998.
The Guns and Dope Party
The Guns and Dope Party the brainchild of Robert Anton Wilson, an author and poet who spent his life writing about cults, religion, and philosophy. He founded the Guns and Dope Party in 2003, during the recall election in California that eventually saw Arnold Schwarzenegger elected governor. Wilson hoped that both right-leaning anti-gun control activists and left-leaning pro-marijuana advocates would support his party, whose unofficial slogan was “I’ll tolerate your hobbies if you’ll tolerate mine.” The Guns and Dope Party advocated for replacing one third of Congress with full-grown adult ostriches and encouraged everyone to write in their own name for President.
The Official Monster Raving Loony Party
The founder of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party (OMRLP), David Sutch, was also known in his campaign materials as “Screaming Lord Sutch, 3rd Earl of Harrow.” He founded the OMRLP in 1983 and encouraged people to vote for his party if they were unsatisfied with any of the other options for parliament. The party is still active, and it’s staffed with people named “The Jersey Flyer,” “Baron Von Thunderclap,” and “R. U. Seerius.” They also have tons of information for anyone who wants to run for election under the OMRLP banner.
