Rich and Famous: NHL Stars Dating Celebrities

The hockey season is back on in full swing. While most NHL players are busy battling on the ice to win the Stanley Cup, there are a few who are enjoying some cozy quiet time with celebrity spouses back at home. Male athletes from all different parts of the sports world tend to hook up with beautiful models and actresses. The land of hockey is no exception to this rule.

What do these couples have common and what draws these opposites together? No one really knows, but they certainly always do look good together!

Wayne Gretzky and Janet Jones

Dig into the hockey-player-and-model-hookup history vault and you’ll find this relationship win from the 1980s. Which begs the question: did Wayne Gretzky start off this trend of NHL players looking for love in Hollywood?

Gretzky first met actress/model Janet Jones in 1983 when both were in their early 20s and already with other people. However, it would take four years for the two began dating. Within six months, the pair decided to get engaged.

Janet Jones would become Mrs. Gretzky in July 1988. The entire affair was dubbed “Canada’s Royal Wedding” by fans and onlookers when the two tied the knot in Edmonton, Alberta.

Sean Avery and Hilary Rhoda

Retired NHLer Sean Avery had made his way around the Hollywood dating circuit. The outspoken bruiser would meet his match in American model Hilary Rhoda when the two crossed paths at an opening party for a restaurant.

Rhoda was dating NFL Quarterback Mark Sanchez when she met the hockey player. However, it didn’t take long for Avery to win her over. The two would date for a while before tying the knot at Long Island’s Parrish Art Museum in the fall of 2015.

Cale Hulse and Gena Lee Nolin

NHL players seem to love their cover girls — and former defenseman Cale Hulse is no exception to this rule. Gena Lee Nolin is famous for her time on that little TV show known as Baywatch.

Hulse and Nolin got married during the 2004-2005 NHL lockout. The two currently live in Phoenix. Nolin still dabbles in acting, while Hulse works for the Arizona Coyotes’ front office.

Dion Phaneuf and Elisha Cuthbert

Like many Canadians, Elisha Cuthbert seems to have a thing for hockey. In fact, one may say that her “type” when it comes to dating is definitely “hockey player”. She once dated Sean Avery before meeting her future husband.

When Cuthbert’s relationship with Avery ended, then-captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs Dion Phaneuf stepped in. The two had a pretty incredible courtship that started in 2008.

Despite some nasty comments from Avery about their newly formed relationship, the two persevered. They would get married in the summer of 2013, where they had a beautiful wedding in remote Prince Edward Island.

The couple has been living their “happily ever after” since, welcoming their first child in late 2017.

Country music sensation Carrie Underwood met Nashville Predators captain Mike Fisher in 2008 during one of her concerts. It was clearly love at first sight as the two would get engaged in 2008. They would eventually marry in the summer of 2010.

What’s even more lovely than the beautiful life these two share is the fact that they support each other in their career endeavors. In fact, Underwood turned into quite the hockey fan. She would watch Fisher play every Predators home game.
