Most Memorable Olympic Moments in History
13. Jesse Owens Wins Gold – Berlin, 1936
Jesse Owens was a world record-breaking track and field athlete but is probably best known for his unbelievable accomplishments at the 1936 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin. He won four medals and is credited with single-handedly crushing Hitler’s myth of Aryan supremacy — a feat which annoyed Hitler so much that he deliberately snubbed Owens’ medal presentation.
Owens credits one of his victories to German long-jumper Luz Long, who gave him tips that caused Owens to ultimately push Long from the gold medal position down to silver. This friendly gesture ultimately inspired a life-long friendship.
