South African athlete Oscar Pistorius’s case was front page news worldwide as soon as the story broke. It all seemed so unreal — he was a Paralympian who was affectionately known as “The Blade Runner,” and whose story inspired millions of people.
Many people didn’t believe it when he was charged with murder after shooting his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, through a bathroom door. His lawyers successfully argued that he thought she was a burglar, and he was eventually convicted of manslaughter. Although he was initially sentenced to five years in prison, he was released after just shy of a year and ordered to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest.
