2018 in Movie Anniversaries

Even though we’re only a few months into 2018, we’ve been treated to a few amazing movies already, with a number of them still upcoming. As we look forward in anticipation, it’s tempting to say that the best day for films are yet to come. There has never been more attention on Hollywood, and the movies that are being produced are doing an excellent job of blending technical skill with the ethereal craft of acting.

However, while it’s fun to look forward, we can also learn a lot from looking back at the past. There are a lot of movies celebrating milestone anniversaries in 2018. Let’s take a look at some of the most influential movies that have an upcoming anniversary this year.

1. Casablanca

One of the defining films in the romance genre is Casablanca, which was released in the United States on the 23rd of January, 75 years ago.

Released in the middle of WWII, the movie follows Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), who is running a popular nightclub in the Moroccan city of Casablanca in the early years of the war. One day, his former lover Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) shows up in his café, on the run with her husband, and asks Rick for his help in getting them safely out of the city.

This movie is the source of tons of quotes that have been referenced in dozens of other movies, including the famous “Here’s looking at you, kid.”

2. Bend It Like Beckham

Before she starred in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Keira Knightly had a supporting role in a small British film called Bend It Like Beckham that came out 15 years ago this August. Bend It Like Beckham follows Jesminder Bhamra, a young Sikh girl living in England who rejects her parents’ ideas for her future and follows her dream of being a pro soccer player.

What started as a small, independent film quickly became a worldwide sensation. Audiences loved Parminder Nagra as the lead Jesminder and raved about the way that director Gurinder Chadha was able to tell the age-old story of teens rebelling against their parents’ wishes in a fun and fresh way.

3. Planet of the Apes

One of the defining sci-fi action movies of the last century has to be Planet of the Apes, a story that was told so well and with such detail that studios are still in the process of exploring that universe through prequels and sequels. In fact, the most recent Planet of the Apes universe film, War for the Planet of the Apes, came out last year.

Although the subsequent films have only been moderately successful, the original set such a high standard that it remains one of the genre’s most exciting films to this day.
