10 Cringeworthy Songs by Respected Artists
This is a list that’s probably going to inspire lots of arguments. Music is a very subjective art form – while one artist or listener might adore a certain song, another person might think that it’s the worst piece of trash ever written. Then, there are these songs, which probably took mountains of nerve to release to the public. It’s been the general consensus for years that these are the worst songs ever to be written by people with actual talent.
1. “Dancing in the Street” by David Bowie and Mick Jagger
It’s not so much the song itself that was bad, but the video for this famous duet between legends Mick Jagger and David Bowie is straight up insane. Producers now sheepishly admit that neither man had been told what the video was going to be about, and they just cobbled it together using footage of the two men jumping around on a green screen set. It’s charming, but considering the level of talent onscreen, the song itself is pretty forgettable.
2. “Wonderful Christmastime” by Paul McCartney
While some people admit that “Wonderful Christmastime” by Paul McCartney is a cute Christmas song, most music lovers scorn the song, pointing to its poor composition and boring lyrics as evidence that Paul McCartney was coasting on his post-Beatles fame. The song was released right before Christmas of 1973, and was subsequently added to McCartney’s later solo compilations, and a Wings album. While it’s been continually panned by music critics, McCartney does make around $400,000 off it per year, mostly from cover version royalties.
3. “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke
While this song is catchy, and it entirely took over the airwaves in the summer of 2013, many people walked back their support of the song after taking a closer listen to the lyrics. Robin Thicke is a good singer and a talented guy, but he really missed the mark on this song. Many people felt that it promoted date rape, and eventually the song was pulled from the airwaves, and replaced with cover or parody versions — a track called “Blurred Bynes” by drag queens Detox, Willam and Vicky Vox is particularly hilarious.
